Abstract

1490305 Abrasive tools E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 17 Oct 1975 42803/75 Heading B3D An abrasive article comprises a support member 11 having an annular support surface 14 and an annular abrasive member 15 secured to the support-surface, the annular abrasive member having annular resin-bonded abrasive means 16 and an annular back-up member 17 of an abradable porous resin secured to one surface of the annular abrading means and to the annular support surface. The support member is of any suitable material, such as aluminium, and has a flat-section 12, formed with a mounting aperture 18, and an outwardly extending section 13 providing the annular support-surface 14. The abrasive member 15 is secured to the support surface by an epoxy adhesive and consists of the abrasive means 16 and back-up member 17. The abrasive means comprises diamond abrasive material bonded by a polyimide resin, and the back-up member comprises a foamed epoxy or porous polyimide material which is of frangible or friable nature and abrades or wears away as the abrasive means is consumed so that wheel dressing is not required. The back-up member may be formed by low pressure hot moulding and sintering or by direct forming and free sintering. In the latter case, solid particulate polymer of formaldehyde is mixed with the polyimide and forms formaldehyde gas in the process to provide the porous polyimide. Fillers, such as silicon carbide, graphite, may be incorporated into the polyimide resin.
