Abstract
1490270 Demister PALL CORP 10 March 1975 [11 March 1974] 9931/75 Heading BIT [Also in Division Fl] A demister for removing entrained liquid from a gas stream comprises an upstream coalescing layer 9 of non-woven fibres compressed between rigid sheets 3 and 7 to a density of 0.02 to 0.5 g/cc and having a fibre dia. of 0.25 to 30 microns and a downstream coalescing layer 11 of fibres or foamed polyurethane with 50-150 pores per square inch and preferably a density of 0.016-0.048 g/cc. As shown the layers are concentric, and the inner layer 9 and its supporting sheets are pleated and annular. Layer 9 may comprise any of a large range of fibres, particularly glass, and may be bonded with any of a wide range of resins or unbonded. Both layers are bonded to end caps 1, 2, the lower cap having drain holes for coalesced liquid. The sheets 3, 7 may be sintered metal, woven or sinter-bonded wire or plastics or perforate metal or plastics. Two layers of polyurethane 11, 12 are shown and are separated from outer metal sleeve 22 by a layer 30 of extruded polypropylene mesh. The demister is used to remove acid mists from gas or oil mist from air, either ejected from an air compressor circuit, a compressed air cylinder or from the air vent of an oil sump in a gas turbine (Fig. 3, not shown). In the latter case the air leaving the demister can be recycled through the turbine so that any re- ,maining oil vapour is burned up. Alternatively the air is cooled before entering the demister and discharged therefrom to atmosphere. Fig. 3 includes a heat exchange step and an array of cyclones in the main air intake. The coalescing layers in the demister have a sound attenuating effect which may be enhanced by additional layers, which may be similar in construction to the coalescing layers or composite or different. Coalescing layers could be flat or corrugated rather than concentric.
