1490187 Cooling IC engine charge GARRETT CORP 5 Dec 1974 [6 Dec 1973] 25867/77 Divided out of 1490186 Heading F1B Combustion air for an internal combustion engine 10 passes in turn, through a compressor 14, heat exchanger 48 arranged to cool the air, compressor 60, heat exchanger 72, and a turbine 64 driving compressor 60, at least one of the heat exchangers being provided with combustion air driven expansion means for moving a cooling medium across that heat exchanger. In the arrangement shown, the expansion means comprises, in the case of heat exchanger 48, a tip turbine 53 driving a fan 52 blowing ambient air over the heat exchanger after passage through filter 50. Heat exchanger 72 is similarly cooled by a tip turbine driven fan 74, both tip turbine receiving their driving air from a branch line 68 which passes through a heat exchanger 70. The latter is heated by exhaust gas flowing from engine 10 to a turbine 16 driving compressor 14. Heat exchanger 70 may alternatively be downstream of turbine 16. In a modification Fig. 1 (not shown), the air leaving compressor 60 may be water cooled in the engine radiator (61) rather than in heat exchanger 72.
