Abstract

1488210 Selective printing INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 15 Oct 1975 [2 Jan 1975] 42143/75 Heading B6F An ink jet printer has a nozzle 14 linearly movable relative to a recording surface 34, a field (generated between plates 24) to deflect droplets in a direction which is at right angles to both the direction of linear relative movement and the axis of the nozzle 14 and a second field (generated between plates 20) which deflects droplets parallel to the direction of linear relative movement, of constant magnitude but in an opposite sense to the linear relative movement. In operation droplets are selectively charged by electrode 18, the uncharged droplets going to the gutter 28. The plates 24 receive a cyclic signal so the field distributes the charged droplets columnwise in a character matrix and the field generated across plates 20 compensates for the relative movement of nozzle and surface 34 so that the printed characters are erect.
