Abstract
1488044 Oxidation catalyst UNION CARBIDE CORP 22 Oct 1974 [23 Oct 1973 13 Sept 1974] 45552/74 Heading B1E [Also in Division C2] A catalyst for the oxidation of unsaturated aldehydes to acids comprises an oxidic composition containing the elements Mo, V, T and, optionally X, in the atomic ratio Mo a V b T c X d where: T is Nb or Nb plus Ti and/or Ta wherein less than 50% wt. of T is Ti and/or Ta; X is Cu, Co, Cr and/or Mn; a is 12; b is 1 to 14; c is 0.1 to 12; and d is 0 to 3.0. The catalyst may be supported, e.g. on silica, alumina or silicaalumina. The composition may be formed by dissolving compounds of the elements, to form a solution, removing solvent and calcining. The niobium and tantalum components are suitably obtained from their oxalates, whilst the titanium component, if present, may be obtained from a water-soluble titanium chelate coordinated with ammonium lactate. The elements are suitably pre-reduced to an oxidation state less than the highest possible, e.g. by contact with hydrocarbons, such as propylene, or by thermal treatment in the presence of ammonia or organic reducing agents which may be produced in situ by decomposition of the precursor compounds containing the elements.
