Abstract
1487357 Nuclear reactor shields COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 9 Dec 1974 [13 Dec 1973] 53167/74 Heading G6C A fast reactor, particularly cooled by molten sodium, the core 1 is surrounded by a neutron shield structure comprising assemblies 20, 22 disposed in adjacent concentric rings around the core, each assembly being of generally cylindrical shape defining an axial bore for throughflow of coolant. The description is given in relation to a reactor whose core support grid is constructed as described in Specification No. 1,401,142 and comprises (a) a main grid part formed of an upper plate 13 and a domed, lower plate 14 the space between which receives coolant from a pump 10 via an annular header 12 and (b) a secondary or "dummy" grid part 23 at the core periphery. The neutron shield structure comprises a first, inner annular region 19 the assemblies 20 of which are supported by the main grid part and a second, outer annular region 21 the assemblies 22 of which are supported by the "dummy" grid part 23. Each assembly 20 comprises a body formed of a stainless steel tube (31) (Fig. 2, not shown) and a foot (36). The assembly is supported by the upper and lower plates 13, 14 and the foot (36) affords apertures (40) for ingress thereto of coolant (under forced circulation) from the space between the plates 13, 14. The interior of the foot (36) accommodates a flow-regulating throttle comprising an axial rod (42) mounting axially spaced radiating baffles (43). Coolant egress from the upper end of the assembly is via an apertured top plug (44). Each assembly 22 comprises a tubular stainless steel body (51) (Fig. 3, not shown) and a foot (53) closely surrounded by a tubular guide (54) of the "dummy" grid 23. The lower end of the foot (53) terminates in a conical plug (55) formed with parallel coolant inlet passages (56) whereby coolant from the main pool 9 within the reactor vessel 5 may circulate by natural convection through the assembly 22 to emerge at its upper region through lateral apertures (59).
