Abstract

1486991 Panoramic radiography PENNWALT CORP 2 Jan 1975 [2 Jan 1974] 78/75 Heading H5R A panoramic radiographic apparatus, e.g. for radiographing the dental arch or the skull, comprises a source 44 of penetrating radiation mounted opposite a film holder 45 these being mounted on an annulus 42 for rotation about an object to be radiographed, the film holder 45 having an exposure slit 144, Fig. 15, past which a film is advanced while the rotation takes place and means being provided to shift the centre of rotation of annulus 42 during the course of an exposure by a variable amount. The emission of X-rays is stopped while the centre of rotation is shifted. In Fig. 2, the shift is provided by pivoting a gimbal frame 50 carrying the annulus 42 and its drive motor 63 about pin 51c (at the lower end) by means of an hydraulic cylinder 70 the stroke of which can be selected to provide the required shift by moving right and left limit switches which are actuated by the movement of the frame 50. Fig. 15 shows a film drive mechanism providing a non-linear movement of a film so as to accurately follow the irregular shape of the object to be radiographed. A cylindrical cassette 46 is rotated by the drive shaft 146 of a constant speed motor (145) Fig. 16 (not shown). An irregular cam 143 based on the shape of the object is driven by the same shaft at the same speed by a belt 157. Against the cam 143 bears a wheel 159 on the end of an arm 149 rigidly connected to the housing of motor (145) which is rotatably mounted. Since the speed of the shaft of the motor is constant with respect to the housing, the speed of the shaft relative to the rest of the apparatus will vary in accordance with the position of wheel 159 since arm 149 rotates the housing of the motor. The complete Specification is an extensive document with much detailed description of ancillary apparatus not susceptible to abridgment. Particular mention may be made of the rotational-centre shift mechanism, Figs. 3 and 4; the drive of annulus 42, Fig. 6; an hydraulically operated patient support, Figs. 7 to 12; and an electro-hydraulic control system, Figs. 18 to 22: none of these Figures is shown here.
