Abstract
1486801 Abrading machining T J O'CONNOR 13 Sept 1974 [14 Sept 1973] 40045/74 Heading B3D In a method of total form abrasion machining a friable workpiece, e.g. a graphite electrode, a cutting master having an abrasive surface of complementary form is moved into engagement with the workpiece to which is imparted a rotary orbital movement, and flushing is effected between the master and workpiece. An electro-hydraulic control arrangement is described which enables the cutting master to be moved away from the workpiece slightly in pulsed sequences to enable an effective flush. The shape of the master is larger or smaller, depending on whether male or female, to a degree related to the amount of orbital movement. Apparatus for carrying out the method comprises a work-table 16 supported for orbital movement on bearing supports 14 and connected to adjustable eccentric drives 80, 90, 94, a platen 24 which carries the cutting master movable relative to a fixed platen 26 by an hydraulic ram 176, and a storage container, pump and filter for supplying a kerosene flushing liquid. A motor 28 drives chains which connect with a sprocket 114 to rotate the eccentric drives 80, 90, 94. The feed pressure of the ram 176 is controlled, e.g. if a workpiece deflects under a cutting pressure, the same setting is maintained until a fine cut is taken as the workpiece relaxes to its undeflected shape.
