Abstract

1486301 Master cylinders GIRLING Ltd 15 Aug 1975 [3 Sept 1974] 38414/74 Heading F2F A tandem master cylinder with first and second pressure chambers 4, 4A has a by-pass outlet 6 to the second chamber controlled by a by-pass valve 8 which includes a differential area piston 9 subjected to the fluid pressures of the chambers 4, 4A on opposite sides thereof coupled to a valve member B, the valve being open when the chambers are substantially unpressurized but closed by built-up of pressure in the first chamber so that the valve is operated during each normal master cylinder operation and is opened by a predetermined excess pressure in the second chamber over that in the first chamber. Failure of pressure to the front brakes, connected to chamber 4, result in piston 9 being moved to pull member 13 clear of outlet 6 so that primary piston 2A engages secondary piston 2 and chamber 4A is pressurized, the fluid passing through outlet 6 direct to the rear brakes. As shown the piston 9 slides in a through bore 10 in piston 2A.
