Abstract
1486068 Echo-sounding systems SIMRAD AS 26 March 1975 [28 March 1974] 12719/75 Heading G1G An echo-sounder utilizing non-linear acoustic signal interaction includes a transmitter transducer 4 mounted in a towed body 2, and a receiving transducer array 6 towed in the vicinity of the body 2. A transmit/receive unit 7 in the towing vessel 1, or in the body 2, energizes transducer 4 at two frequencies simultaneously to give a directional beam at the difference frequency. By tilting the transmission beam, or by introducing time delays between the respective signals from hydrophones 5 of array 6, the transmission and reception beams are made to overlap, thus avoiding reception of noise from outside the area insonified by the transmission beam. Array 6 may be one, two or three-dimensional and towed directly from body 2 or from cable 3 or in conjunction with a sinker.
