Abstract

1485759 Measuring temperature electrically LUCAS INDUSTRIES Ltd 2 Sept 1974 [30 Aug 1973] 40872/73 Heading GIN [Also in Division H3] Apparatus for determining temperature at a plurality of given positions in a gas stream includes a carriage in the form of an arm 11 pivoted about an axis 12 and movable to carry a head 15 bearing thermocouples to said positions by an actuator 13 and motor 14. To determine when the head 15 is at a given position a sensing head 21 is provided on the other end of the arm from the head 15 and is movable over a coded scale 22 having holes 25 in a fixed plate 16. The sensing head 21 supports a light emitting diode 23 and a photo transistor 24 on opposite sides of the scale. Signals from the transistor 24 feed a control circuit 26 which operates a braking mechanism 27 to stop the motor. The circuit output also initiates operation of a delay circuit 28 and, at the end of its delay period, the latter actuates a recorder 29 to record thermocouple temperatures. After the reading has been taken the recording circuit removes the brakes from the motor and re-starts it. The position of the arm 11 is indicated by a display 34 which receives signals from six additional phototransistors 32 receiving light from diodes 31 on the sensing head 21 and providing inputs to a decoder 33 operating the display.
