Abstract

1485601 Strengthening glass YAMAMURA GLASS KK 5 Jan 1976 [2 April 1975] 00173/76 Heading C1M A hollow soda-lime glass article is strengthened by: (1) applying at least one metal oxideforming compound (e.g. SnCl 4 ) to the outer surface of the article at a temperature sufficient to form the metal oxide (e.g. SnO 2 ) as a coating of thickness 50-130 A; (2) applying to the inner and outer surfaces of the glass article to adhere thereto either a solution comprising 85-45 parts (by weight) KCl and 15-55 parts KNO 3 (KCl and KNO 3 totalling 100 parts) or a solution comprising 30-100 parts K 2 SO 4 and 70-0 parts of KNO 3 (K 2 SO 4 and KNO 3 totalling 100 parts); (3) heating the article at an elevated temperature (e.g. 500‹ C.) below the strain point of the glass for a time sufficient to form a compressive stress of at least 700 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> and a depth at least 10 Á; and (4) cooling to room temperature and removing any remaining salt layer. The oxide coating may be formed from a compound of Sn, Ti, Zr or V at, e.g. 500- 600‹ C. The salt solution, which may include KCl, K 2 SO 4 and KNO 3 , may be applied at 30-75‹ C., the article then being heated to, e.g. 130‹ C. The solution may comprise 0À2-1% by volume of a wetting agent (e.g. an anionic surfactant).
