Abstract

1485275 Catalytic cracking UNITED AIRCRAFT CORP 22 Oct 1974 [13 Dec 1973] 45664/74 Headings B1E and B1F [Also in Division C1] A catalyst bed for use in cracking of gaseous or distillate hydrocarbon fuels to produce hydrogen comprises a bed of pellets comprising spherical substrates of alumina and/ or zirconia of diameters between 6.35 mm and 15.85 mm with nickel deposited to a depth of between 25.4 and 2540 microns from the surface of the substrates, the catalyst bed having pellets of nickel content of ¢-5% wt. at its inlet end and of between 15 and 50% wt. at its outlet end. The figure shows an, apparatus for carrying out the cracking. The fuel is led by line 34 into reactor 3 wherein it flows downwardly through an initial vapourizer chamber 12 containing a bed 16 of uncatalysed pellets, e.g. ceramic saddles, constrained by a grid or screen 17 and then flows upwardly through the annular catalyst bed 10. A pair of reactors 3, 4 are connected in parallel to enable regeneration of catalyst in one whilst the other is performing a cracking function. The regeneration to effect removal of carbon deposits is carried out by the introduction of an oxygen-containing gas by line 30. The nickel may be applied to the substrates by (i) impregnation with nickel nitrate followed by decomposition to the oxide and reduction with hydrogen; (ii) mulling nickel powder and the substrates together followed by sintering or heat cycling in the cracking- regeneration process; or (iii) flame-spraying. 1485308 Nozzles GRINNELL FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEMS CO INC 11 Oct 1974 [11 Oct 1973] 44074/74 Heading B2F A fire extinguishing apparatus comprises a nozzle 10 for fluid, mounted horizontally in the side wall of an enclosure and having a discharge orifice 19, and at least one wedge shaped deflecting member 13 disposed in the path of the fluid by an operably associated yoke 12. Preferably the angle α between one face of each member and the fluid discharge path is less than 20‹, and the included angle # of each member is 10‹-60‹. The nozzle may comprise a frusto-conical inlet portion 19a, threaded at 18 for connection to a thermally activated fluid source, leading smoothly to a cylindrical portion. Protuberances 16 may extend above the surface of the deflecting members to alter the fluid distribution pattern. The nozzle may be of small transverse dimensions, and be substantially hidden from view. The yokes 12, 14 may be rotatable such that action of the discharging fluid causes placement of the members 13, 15 into the path of the fluid.
