Abstract

1484631 Automatic-circuit-breakers GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 16 Aug 1974 36237/74 Heading H1N An automatic circuit-breaker has a thermal tripping element 12 with an expansion plunger 53 in a fixed casing 50 which acts as a current carrying heater. Electrical connections to the casing 50 are made at 59 and at one of a set of alternative tags 60 to 64 (Fig. 2, not shown). The rounded end 55 of the plunger 53 is engaged by a projection 56 of a spring biased latch lever 36 which is also the armature of an electromagnet including a yoke 80 and the casing 50 as the conductor thereof. Expansion of the plunger 53 or attraction of the armature 36 allows a latch 38 to release the circuit-breaker mechanism to open its contacts 30, 32. The plunger may be of plastics material such as polyethylene and the material of the plunger may as shown in Fig. 4 be separated into plug sections 84 separated by eddy current heating discs 86.
