Abstract

1484569 Extruding hollow, elongate articles INDUSTRY SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 9 Oct 1974 [10 Oct 1973] 47420/73 Headings B3A and B3P A method of making a hollow, elongate article includes hydrostatically extruding through a die 28 a billet which surrounds at least one elongate cavity 12 filled with a substance 14 having a hardness not greater than that of the billet and removing the substance from the billet during or after extrusion, the billet comprising at least two discrete parts and extrusion taking place in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the cavity. One form of billet comprises a discardable nose portion 48, Fig. 6, and an end closure 54 screwed on to a cylindrical body portion 50 which may be of copper while the portion 48 may be of aluminium. The billet may be filled with household salt which is easily removed from the extruded product, e.g. by hot water or steam. The billet may be formed into a fivelobed cam and the cavity may comprise between 2À8-25% of the cross-sectional area, Fig. 2 (not shown). Alternatively thin walled tubing of non- circular section or comprising a number of tubes nested within a larger diameter tube may be made as may a thick walled tube having a number of longitudinal ducts. The cavity or cavities are drilled in the original billet if they are of circular cross-section or the billet may be cast with non-circular cavity or cavities. A steel billet is filled with aluminium alloy and coated with zinc phosphate and stearate soap. Immediately before extrusion it is further coated with molybdenum disulphide and graphite grease. After extrusion the aluminium alloy is punched out or melted out preferably by passing an electric current through it. Alternatively the extruded billet may be immersed in a 20% solution of sodium hydroxide in water, which attacks the aluminium alloy at its interface with the steel so that only a small amount of the alloy need be dissolved. For long extruded products, the substance, e.g. lead or Woods metal, is melted by heating for removal. Materials which may be extruded include stainless and other steels, aluminium and its alloys, titanium, niobium and zirconium. The extrusion process may be assisted by drawing the billet through the die.
