Abstract
1484440 Moulding packaging trays DIAMOND INTERNATIONAL CORP 3 March 1975 [21 June 1974] 5763/76 Divided out of 1484439 Heading B5A A method of making a packaging tray (such as that of the parent Specification-see Division B8) from moulded pulp or the like, the tray having a base comprising an open grid-like array of ribs having substantially vertical side walls, comprises forming a wet preform (e.g. in a suction mould) to have generally the same form as the finished product but with inverted V- shaped ribs, transferring said wet preform to a suitable die and reshaping the ribs to the desired shape by application of pressure. In the illustrated embodiment, the blank is placed in a lower die 104 made of a resilient material (e.g. silicone rubber) and the sloping wall portions 106 are deformed and made vertical on insertion of the rigid (e.g. aluminium) upper die member 150. In another embodiment (Figs. 9-16, not shown) the lower die member is rigid and the channels into which the ribs are placed have vertical walls at the bottom and the walls diverge towards the top. The upper die is made of resilient material and deforms on engagement with the lower die so as to force the pulp into the lower, vertically-walled, part of the channel.
