Abstract
1484136 Squaring circuits FERRANTI Ltd 2 Dec 1974 [1 Dec 1973] 55772/73 Heading G4G A circuit for generating an output signal whose average voltage is proportional to the square of an input signal comprises a relaxation oscillator 11 using a unijunction transistor 15 which generates a substantially linear sawtooth waveform voltage of frequency determined by resistor 23 and capacitor 24 the sawtooth voltage being taken through an emitter follower 12 to the emitter of another unijunction transistor 26 used as a comparator whose inputs are the emitter and the base connection 29, the base input receiving the input signal through a resistor 27. Transistor 26 only conducts when the sawtooth voltage exceeds the input voltage causing the voltage at 29 to follow a square wave pattern whose amplitude switches from the input voltage to a lower level, the width of the pulses being dependent on the difference between the input voltage and the peak of the sawtooth. It is shown that the average of the square wave voltage, as derived from a low pass filter 14 is proportional to the square of the input voltage and independent of the oscillator frequency. The amplitude of the sawtooth voltage must exceed the input voltage and periodic variations in the latter must be of substantially lower frequency than that of the oscillator.
