Abstract
1483811 Varistors GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 27 Sept 1974 [27 Sept 1973] 42154/74 Heading H1K A metal oxide varistor 10 has a body 11 formed from a metal oxide and a plurality of additives and a passivating coating 12 formed from at least some of these additives. The additives are reacted together to form a product which is added to a carrier substance, e.g. a compound of Bi, B, Sb or Si. The additives may be the oxides of Bi, Co, Mn and Ti and the metal oxide is ZnO. After applying the coating, the body is heated to fuse the carrier substances but without melting the reaction product of the additives. Finally, metallic contacts 13 (14) (Fig. 1, not shown) are applied from Ag paste or by a metallic flame spray.
