1483723 Fibreboard for shoe insole blanks, and its manufacture COLONIAL FIBER CO 24 March 1976 [5 June 1975] 11815/76 Headings D2A and D2B [Also in Division A3] A multi-ply fibreboard 46, see Fig. 1 suitable for use in the manufacture of insoles 10 comprises an integrated fibrous sheet material having a longitudinally-extending ply-release stratum 38 located therein, and including at least one narrow separation zone 54, 56 which extends from one surface of the fibreboard toward and into communication with the release stratum and is characterised by a reduction in fibre concentration such that separation of the fibreboard may be effected along said zones without the necessity of a cutting operation and without substantial disruption of the fibres abutting said zones or delamination of adjacent plies in areas beyond the zones. The fibreboard may be formed using a Fourdrinier or cylinder papermaking machine. The web formed on the machine may be continuously accumulated on a maker roll until the desired thickness has been obtained. The release stratum may be formed by applying an appropriate release material to one surface of the web, preferably when about ¢ of the total number of plies have been accumulated. The release stratum may be a strip of paper or a surface coating, preferably applied by spraying. The spray may comprise softening or debonding cationic agents or wax emulsions. The separation zones may be formed by means of jets of water. The apparatus for forming the release stratum and separation zones, see Fig. 2, may comprise a platen 60 mounted above a felt conveyor 34 which carries the fibrous web from cylinder 30 to make roll 36, said platen being slidably mounted on bars 62 for movement in a direction transverse to the direction of movement of the conveyor, a housing 64 for a spray head 74 for the release coating composition, said housing having a mask 66 with at least one slot 68, and at least one fluid jet nozzle 76 for forming the separation zones.
