Abstract

1482978 Tube expanding; welding by pressure IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 26 April 1976 [27 June 1975] 27291/75 Headings B3J and B3R A metal tube 10 is expanded by a shocksensitive explosive 24 detonated by a shock wave generated outside the tube and conducted to the explosive 24 through a non- metallic tube 15. The end of one tube may be expanded within the end of a larger tube, or into the tube plate 12 or a nozzle. Tube ends may be expanded singly, consecutively or simultaneously, and welds will result if sufficient explosive is used. The explosive 24 may be lead azide which may be used with a secondary explosive 23 such as pentaerythritol tetranitrate, both being compressed directly into the end of the polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride or nylon tube 15, or inserted therein in separate containers. The shock wave may be generated by exploding a charge of explosive, exploding a wire by electric current or, as shown, by discharging a spark across a gap 21 between electrodes 22. The spark may be produced by discharging a capacitor or by a piezoelectric device. The inside of the tube 15 may be coated with reactive substance, such as the explosive 23, which on ignition by the shockwave adds energy to the shockwave.
