Abstract
1482956 Injection-blow-moulding; multilayer articles ILIKON CORP 10 Sept 1974 39493/74 Heading B5A Multilayer plastics articles are formed from at least two different thermoplastic materials by injection-moulding a first parison from a first thermoplastic material, cooling and injectionmoulding a layer of a second thermoplastic material thereon in a second injection mould and blow-moulding the composite parison. As shown in Fig. 1, a turntable carries a plurality of mandrels 2 and is indexable in 90 degree steps between first and second injection stations, a blowing station and a discharge station. At the first injection station, material is fed from heater 6 through nozzles 8 to form parisons 3 on mandrels 2. At the second injection station, a layer is injected from heater 17 through nozzles 15 over parisons 3 to form composite parisons 4. The final articles 23/26 are blow-moulded in blow-moulds 20 by air supplied through mandrels 2 and ejected at station 25, e.g. by blowing through the mandrel. The moulds and mandrels may each have passages (10) (11) and (35), (Fig. 2, not shown) respectively for heating/cooling fluid. The article may have more than two layers. The apparatus of Fig. 3 (not shown) has three temperature conditioning stations (42, 48, 52) between first and second injection stations (38, 44), second injection and blowing stations (44, 46) and the discharge and first injection stations (50, 38) respectively. Cooling may be effected by a chill plate, coolant circulation through the mandrels or air cooling. Heating may be effected by fluid circulation in the mandrel, induction heating of the mandrel or dielectric heating of the first layer. The mandrels may be of a material having a high elastic modulus or have its tip secured in the mould to prevent bending. The moulding materials may be polyethylene with polyvinyldene chloride or acrylonitrile/ethylacrylate copolymer with acrylics, polystyrene, polypropylene or a cellulosic, e.g. ethyl cellulose, cellulose acetate-butyrate, cellulose acetate or propionate.
