Abstract

1482818 Expandable styrene & substituted styrene polymers SEALED AIR CORP 19 March 1975 11494/75 Heading C3C Expandable discrete bit-pieces (i.e. freeflowing forms) of styrene-polymer (i.e. including substituted styrene polymers) impregnated with a liquid aliphatic or cycloaliphatic impregnant which volatizes below the polymer's Vicat softening point and is a hydrocarbon, chlorinated hydrocarbon or mixture thereof, the polymer being insoluble in the impregnant, are made by mixing the styrene-polymer bit-pieces in an impregnator chamber which is cylindrically shaped, free of internal moving parts, and can be hermetically sealed, with the impregnant and an aqueous solution of a water-soluble emulsifying agent, there being sufficient emulsifying agent to emulsify the impregnant in the aqueous solution, hermetically sealing the impregnator chamber after filling it with the aqueous solution, rotating the closed impregnator chamber around an axis of rotation intersecting perpendicularly the longitudinal central axis of the cylinder at or adjacent the midpoint of the axis, at a speed sufficient to maintain the bit-pieces in agitation, while heating the aqueous solution by indirect heat exchange to a temperature between 40‹ C. and a temperature below the second order transition point of the polymer until the bit-pieces have become impregnated with the impregnant while remaining free from agglomeration and separating the impregnated bit-pieces from the liquid phase. In the examples pellets or grind of polystyrene or copolymers of styrene and acrylonitrile, n-butyl acrylate or α-methylstyrene were impregnated with pentane in an aqueous aqueous solution of a mixture of the mono- and di-phosphate ester of an ethoxylated alkyl phenol containing potassium persulphate, sodium bisulphite, sodium pyrophosphate, α,α<SP>1</SP>- azobisisobutyronitrile, anhydrous aluminium silicate coated with a polymer made by moisturehydrolysis of vinyl tris(2-methoxyethyoxy)- silane and/or tris(2,3-dibromopropyl)phosphate, and the expandable pellets were expanded in boiling water.
