Abstract

1482696 Bonding glass to metal MULLARD Ltd 1 Oct 1974 42598/74 Addition to 1426873 Heading C1M A glass face plate is sealed to the rim of a metal cone by providing a layer of a malleable metal having a melting point in the range 200‹ to 660‹ C. between facing surfaces of the face plate and cone; and pressing the face plate and cone together at a pressure of between 1 and 5 tons per square inch at a temperature which is both between 150‹ and 450‹ C. and below the melting point of the malleable metal at that pressure. The pressure and temperature are applied for a period not exceeding one minute after which the assembly is allowed to cool while the pressure is maintained. The malleable material may be aluminium, lead or lead containing solder. The latter may also contain indium or silver and tin.
