Abstract

1482634 Road crash barriers; wall building units N A HARRISON 30 Sept 1974 [30 June 1973] 31285/73 Headings EIB and EIG A crash barrier is formed by a particulate mass 5, e.g. of sand or slag, behind a retaining wall 2, the wall 2 comprising an array of units 3, shown laid in courses, each unit 3, such as B Fig. 3 or C, Fig. 5, including at least one chamber (such as 14 or 18) filled with particulate mass and at least one fluid tight chamber (such as 15 or 19) filled with a liquid or gas. As shown a bridge pier 7 is protected by a part-cylindrical barrier (Fig. 2, not shown) of sand, sand-bags or slag 5 surmounted by soil 6 and retained by the wall 2. Between the wall 2 and the road are columns of sand 4 held by a ribbed rubber sheath 1 carrying a friction-reducing outer strip (not shown) of plastics, the sheet 1 being anchored by soil 13 containing a sand-filled polythene tube. In a modification a longitudinal roadside crash barrier is formed by a series of retaining walls each enveloping a particulate slag mass which is anchored by central stakes. The wall building unit B, Fig. 3, may be of polythene and comprises a circular-section closed chamber 15 filled with pressurised air and surrounded by a chamber 14 filled with sand, frictional bonding between units in a course being obtained by an overlapping polythene piece 10. The upper edges 12 of each unit have longitudinal lengths of polythene (not shown) attached thereto. The wall building unit C, Fig. 5, has multiple polystyrene walls 20 providing chambers 18 filled with sand and chambers 19 filled with pressurised air bags.
