Abstract

1482466 Yieldable mine roof support stilts SCHWARZ HOLYWELL Ltd 4 July 1975 [4 July 1974] 29586/74 Heading E1E A mine roof support comprises a stilt in which is received a support leg 2, the stilt comprising two axially connected tubular portions 1 and 3, of which the upper tube 1 has a diameter slightly larger than the leg 2, so that the leg is a sliding fit therein, and the lower tube 3 has a diameter smaller than the leg, the junction of the two tubes forming a ledge 4 on which the leg 2 initially rests, and the load of the mine roof in use thrusting the leg 2 into the smaller tube 3 and expanding the tube, the stilt thus providing a controlled rate of yielding. The leg 2, as shown, is an I-section rolled steel joist, and if its web and flanges are of different widths, the tubes 1 and 3 may be of oval section. The stilt may have a base plate 5.
