Abstract

1482315 Treating glass surfaces SAINTGOBAIN INDUSTRIES 30 June 1975 [2 July 1974] 27517/75 Heading C1M In forming a metal oxide layer on the surface of heated glass (e.g. ribbon 7), a stream of gas containing particles of a metal compound thermally decomposable or oxidizable to the oxide is supplied to a cylone 6 supported over the heated glass 7, so that the particles are deposited on the glass and are converted to the oxide. Preferably gas (e.g. air) containing the particles (e.g. acetyl acetonates of Co, Cr, Fe or Ti) is passed through inlet 1, pipe 2 and blower 3 to the inlet 4 of the cyclone 6, the particles being deposited through opening 10 and nozzle 8 on to the glass 7, and the gas being passed through outlet 11 and flexible tube 5 back into pipe 2 for re-cycling. The gas is preferably pre-heated to 100-120‹ C. The glass 7 is preferably at 500-650‹ C., and is preferably treated while passing from furnace F to an annealing lehr (not shown). The cyclone 6 may move transversely of the glass ribbon, or a plurality of fixed cyclones may be used.
