Abstract
1482288 Pipe; joints SOC ANON DES USINES CHAUSSON 24 July 1974 [6 Sept 1973] 32658/74 Heading F2G [Also in Division F4] In a heat exchanger, e.g. a vehicle radiator, comprising a fin and tube core assembly extending between tube and plates 3, and lateral plates 13 bounding opposed sides of said core assembly and extending between header tanks 9 1 , 9 2 each having a perforate wall 9a into which the ends of said tubes 1 project, the ends of the lateral plates 13 1 are constructed to co-operate with the header tanks in a manner such that said headers are urged towards one another thereby compressing resilient material 4, which is located between each header wall 9a and tube plate 3, to form a fluid tight joint around each tube 1. As shown, the upper end 20 of header 9 1 , which has a shoulder 24 defining an internal ledge adapted to receive an annular member 25 carrying an upstanding filler tube 26, is formed with flanged edges 21 which lockingly cooperate with suitably contoured protrusions 32 extending inwardly from flanged edges 31 at one end 30 of the lateral plate 13 1 upon rotation of said plate in the direction of arrow f 1 . The other end 34 of said lateral plate 13 1 is formed with locking lugs 34a which are resiliently clipped over lateral embossment 23 on the other header 9 2 A gasket 29 is held between the annular member 25 and the end portion 30 of the lateral plate 13 1 ; a cap 27 closes the filler tube 26. Each header tank is made of synthetic resin, has a cross-section which progressively increases or decreases across the core assembly, and is formed with an inlet or outlet connection 18 and fixing lug 19. The tubes 1 may be of circular, rectangular or oval cross-section. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 1) the ends of the lateral plates (13) are apertured to receive projections (10) on the header tanks, clamping means (14, 15) being provided to hold the lateral plates (13), in position; the tubes extend vertically.
