Abstract
1482245 Suction cleaners BAXTER TRAVENOL LABORATORIES Inc 26 June 1975 [1 July 1974] 27063/75 Heading A4F [Also in Division A5] A suction device, especially for keeping a field of surgery clear of blood, comprises a suction tip 10 having a plurality of holes therein and connected to a roller pump 20 for providing suction, said pump being controlled by means 30 remote from the suction tip and operated in response to pressure variations in a handle portion 14 which communicates with the controlling means through a tube 36. The means 30 provides a flow of air along tube 36, which air normally escapes through an aperture in the handle portion. When the aperture is manually obstructed, the pressure in tube 36 rises and a switch in the means 30 is actuated to start the pump. Alternatively, means 30 may provide suction in tube 36, the pressure in said tube falling on obstructing the aperture to thereby start the pump. In a modification, a resilient squeeze bulb is attached to the end of tube 36, squeezing of the bulb effecting an increased pressure to operate the pump. In another embodiment, tube 36 is attached to a tube portion (86) Fig. 6 (not shown), extending alongside tip 10 and having an aperture (84) at the bottom thereof. The tip is, in use, placed at the bottom of a surgical incision and as the blood level rises above aperture (84) the pressure in portion (86) and tube 36 rises to thereby actuate the pump, the pump being stopped when the liquid level drops to a predetermined value. When suction is applied, blood passes into tip 10 and is passed along lines 16, 22 to a reservior 24 where the blood is filtered and stored before being reinfused to the patient through line 26. Reservoir 24 has an air vent 25.
