Abstract

1481455 Optical fibres AMERICAN OPTICAL CORP 27 Sept 1974 [28 Sept 1973] 42101/74 Heading C1M [Also in Division G2] A multi tubule liquid core fibre optic device is made by assembling tubes of relatively lowrefractive index vitreous material (e.g. fused silica or borosilicate glass) side by side to form a bundle which is heated and drawn to reduce its cross-sectional area, the tubules so formed then being filled with a liquid of relatively high refractive index (e.g. tetrachloroethylene or carbon tetrachloride) to make them transmissive to light by total internal reflection. The liquid may be sucked into the tubules by vacuum and is held there by capillary action. The fibre bundle may be cut into sections and the bundling and drawing repeated as above. The initial tubes tube sections or final fibre bundles, may be coated with a fusible, leachable material (e.g. A1 or acid soluble glass) which may be leached out from the intermediate parts of the product to give a flexible portion between rigid ends.
