Abstract

1481138 Container components; easy-opening containers ALUMINUM CO OF AMERICA 20 May 1975 [6 June 1974] 21684/75 Addition to 1436617 Headings B8T and B8D [Also in Division B3] A metal can end 10 is provided with at least one substantially rigid inwardly displaceable opening panel 22 and an integral outwardly projecting deflectable portion 32 separated from the panel 22 by a fracturable junction 38 provided by a V-shaped annular indentation 28 and an inwardly concave annular surface 39. Digital pressure applied to the deflectable portion 32 causes a fraction of the junction and allows the opening panel to be displaced inwardly. A hinge portion 26 may be provided as may a zone of coining 40. The container component is formed as shown in Fig. 5 by placing a sheet of metal between dies 50 and 76 and a die 68 and displacing dies 50 and 76 towards die 68. A die 60 provides the zone of coining 40. The material used may be work hardened aluminium alloy which is at least quarter hard and preferably three-quarter hard temper or extra hard temper alloy, partially annealed as a result of heating it to cure a protective coating thereon. The rounded corner 70 of die 68 prevents damage to a protective coating.
