Abstract

1480971 Isobutylphenyl-acetic and -propionic acids SPA SOC PRODOTTI ANTIBIOTICI SpA 18 March 1976 [3 April 1975] 13670/75 Heading C2C 2 - (4 - Isobutylphenyl) - acetic or -propionic acid is prepared by reacting 4-isobutyl-acetophenone or -propiophenone with an alkanol in the presence of a salt of trivalent thallium, e.g. thallium nitrate, and hydrolysing the resulting 2-(4-isobutylphenyl)-acetate or propionate. The reaction with the alcohol is preferably carried out in the presence of perchloric acid, and the hydrolysis is preferably effected by means of potassium tert.-butylate in an organic medium. 2-(4-Isobutylphenyl)-acetic acid may be methylated to form 2-(4-isobutylphenyl)-propionic acid by treatment with a methylating agent, e.g. MeI, in anhydrous liquid ammonia in the presence of NaNH 2 or KNH 2 prepared in situ from metallic sodium or potassium and liquid ammonia.
