Abstract

148,082. Levy, L. A. Oct. 20, 1919. Roasting granular substances.-Cocoa is roasted in such a way that it is not brought into contact with any surface at a temperature higher than that to which it is desired to subject the beans, e.g. 140‹ C., the heat being applied indirectly. It is stated that in such circumstances the cocoa can be allowed to remain under treatment for a prolonged period without deterioration. The cocoa passes from a hopper 15 on to an endless chain or belt 8 whereon it is distributed by stirrers 20 mounted on vertical shafts or by blades rotating on horizontal shafts. Heat is applied by means of pipes 13 through which hot water is circulated, the heating chamber being closed by casings 17, 18 and provided with a chimney 14 for the escape of steam. A succession of such endless belts arranged in a vertical series may be employed.
