Abstract
1480742 Shielded containers FOSTER WHEELER POWER PRODUCTS Ltd 1 Oct 1974 [3 Oct 1973] 46270/73 Heading B4Q A container for transporting harmful materials such as radio-active materials, in particular a Magnox fuel transport flask such as is shown in Fig. 1, has a lid 14 fixed to the flask 10 and, at the corners of the lid, the flask has partspheroidal shock absorbers 16 which project from the corners, the centre of the spheroid being positioned within the lid 14 so that impact loads on a shock absorber 16 tend to hold it on to the flask 10 rather than to dislodge it. The shock absorbers 16 are preferably Al-Si alloy castings, and may be secured to the lid 14 by stainless steel studs 22 extending upwardly from the lid and nuts 24. The sidewalls 12 of the flask 10 are finned to assist in cooling the flask. The lower parts 20 of the shock absorbers 16 are in the form of a skirt extending at about 30 degrees to the sidewalls 12 and within this skirt are shear pins which fix the absorber to the sidewalls, the skirt protecting these from impact damage. In the part-spheroidal surfaces 18 of the shock absorbers 16 are threaded bores 26 for assisting handling of the absorbers during their fitting to the flask 10 and for use in urging diagonally opposed absorbers towards one another during their fitting so that they can be secured on to the corners of the flask under tension.
