Abstract

1480673 Abrasive tools S A RANDS 2 May 1975 [10 May 1974] 18450/75 Heading B3D A rotary abrasive brush comprises elastically bendable bristles 225 mounted on an axial support 24 with the bristle ends forming a cylindrical array, and an abrasive globule 30 on each bristle end, each globule consisting of a hardenable first bonding material and a particulate a brasive material therein and being bonded to the end of a bristle by a two-component synthetic resin adhesive. The bristles 225 are of flexible thermoplastics material, such as nylon, fixed at their inner end portions, or middle portions, in a twisted wire 26 forming the support 24. The outer ends of the bristles are initially coated with two-component resorcinat formaldehyde resin, the first component being in liquid form and the second component including a ha.rdener in the form of a paraformaldehyde powder and cellulosic filler; the two component resin is then hardened and cured. The ends of the bristles are dipped in an epoxy resin 34 and then into finely divided particulate material 36, such as tungsten carbide, carborundum or other abrasive material, to form a coated globule 30 on each bristle, the globules then being cured. In other embodiments, the abrasive particles are in layers or intermixed in the epoxy resin, and the globules may be formed on enlarged ends on the bristles. The uncoated parts of the bristles permits the bristles to flex so that the brush can be used on holes of different diameters.
