Abstract

1480603 Centrifugal shaft couplings DUCELLIER ET CO 7 Nov 1974 [28 Nov 1973] 48168/74 Heading F2U A centrifugal ignition timing coupling has an advance/speed curve ABC in which at lower engine speeds the ignition timing is advanced as shown at A while at higher engine speeds the ignition timing is retarded as at C. The construction consists of a pair of weights 5 movable about pivots 3, 4 on a plate 2 rigid with the drive shaft 1, a first spring 15 being arranged between a pin 16 on the weight shown and a lug 17 on an intermediate plate 6 and a second spring 11 being arranged between a lug 13 on the intermediate plate and a hole 12 in a plate 9 carrying the cam 10 and rotatable about the drive shaft. At lower speeds the weight 5 swings anticlockwise to rotate the intermediate plate 6 clockwise through an angle (α), Fig. 2 (not shown), by means of a slot in the weight coacting with a pin 7 on the intermediate plate, the tension of the second spring 11 causing the plate 2 to advance clockwise by the amount (α) until an adjustable abutment 20 on the pin 16 engages a ramp 21a in a cut-out 21 in the plate 9. The ignition timing then no longer varies as shown at B until the speed overcomes the forces of the springs 11 and 15 when further anticlockwise swing of the weight causes the intermediate plate 6 to move clockwise through a further angle of (#), Fig. 3 (not shown), by means of the pin 7 and causes the plate 9 to move anticlockwise through an angle (#) by means of the abutment 20 running outwardly along the ramp 21a until the action is stopped by an adjustable abutment 22 on the pin 3 engaging a face 23b on the intermediate plate. The first spring 15 operates in conjunction with an adjustable abutment 18 while the second spring 11 operates in conjunction with an adjustable abutment 14. If desired, a further spring may be employed to obtain two slopes A1 and A2 in the curve at low speeds.
