Abstract

1480332 Welding by fusion PIEYROLLE PARSONS Ltd 25 June 1974 [25 June 1973] 30087/73 Heading B3R Arc, particularly submerged-arc, welding apparatus for use in deep, narrow weld preparation grooves, comprises a consumable electrode wire guide 1 of elongate slab configuration and a rigid sheath 3 of heat and electrically insulating, abrasion resistant, material, e.g. alumina ceramic, surrounding and held on the guide and apertured for electrode wire exit, said sheath preventing guide/ workpiece side wall arcing whilst permitting sufficient approach of the electrode wire to the workpiece side wall to obtain satisfactory fusion of the latter, and preventing flux and slag entry into the guide. The guide comprises legs la, 1b, e.g. of beryllium copper, mounted in a support 2, e.g. of brass. Electrode wire passage is provided by an alumina tube 5 and opposing grooves formed in the leg ends 1c. Leg support plates 6, e.g. of mild steel, may be provided. The sheath 3 is held on the guide by bolts 7, 8. In an alternative embodiment, one or both of the guide legs are pivoted in the region of the support 6 and a compression spring acts outwardly on one or both legs at the support 2 to press the leg ends 1c on the wire to accommodate leg end groove wear whilst maintaining adequate leg/wire electrical contact.
