Abstract

1478981 Torque motors LUCAS INDUSTRIES Ltd 15 Aug 1974 [5 Sept 1973] 41721/73 Heading H2A In a torque motor having a permanent magnet 10 with arms 11, 12 formed with a plurality of pairs of polepiece faces 13-16, an armature 19 is pivotally mounted for restricted angular movement within a coil 18, and the armature has a plurality of pairs of faces 20a/20b, 21a/21b which form air gaps 22-25 with the faces 13- 16, and the arrangement is such that the armature 19 can be rotated selectively clockwise or anti-clockwise by passing a current of appropriate direction through the coil 18. The faces bounding the air gaps form arcs relative to the pivotal axis of the armature 19, and when the armature turns the rate of increase of reluctance of half of the gaps in the motor is equal to the rate of decrease of reluctance of the other half of the gaps. In addition, flux produced by the coil 18 along the paths C, D aids the permanent magnet flux in half of the gaps in the paths A, B and opposes the permanent magnet flux in the other half.
