Abstract

1477642 Glass fibre resin composites PILKINGTON BROS Ltd 4 Oct 1974 [22 Oct 1973] 49060/73 Heading D1R [Also in Division B5] A glass-fibre reinforced resin composite is prepared by producing non-continuous glass filaments from molten glass and spraying onto the filaments, immediately after their production, a size composition adapted to protect the filaments against abrasion and containing a film-forming agent which produces a degree of interfilament bonding, forming the filaments into a fibrous glass mat, applying a settable synthetic resin to the mat and compressing the impregnated mat to produce a composite with substantially no voids. The filaments are produced by steam blowing using a multiple tipped bushing or by centrifugal spinning and have a diameter of 10 to 30 microns. They are sized by spraying with an aqueous dispersion of polyvinyl acetate, a silane coupling agent and a lubricant (three being specified) to deposit 2% by weight dry solids. The filaments are collected on a conveyor to form a mat. In example 1 the mat is dried then sprayed with an aqueous slurry of partly polymerised polyester resin, calcium carbonate filler and tbutyl benzoate catalyst and bed in between sheets of polyethylene film through compression rollers to form a "prepreg". Portions were moulded under pressure at 150‹C for 2 minutes. In example 10 the slurry is replaced by powdered epoxy resin. Laminates. The mat of example 1 is collected after spraying with slurry and a plurality of superimposed mats pressed between metal plates and then hot press moulded. Alternatively three impregnated mats are superimposed in a mould, catalysed polyester resin without filler is poured on and the laminate is hot press moulded.
