Abstract

1477378 Making olefin polymer fibrids BASF AG 19 Dec 1974 [21 Dec 1973] 54854/74 Heading C3P Olefin polymer fibrids are made by dissolving an olefin polymer in an organic solvent under pressure and at a temperature which is above the boiling point of the solvent at standard pressure, and flashing the solution by passing it through an orifice into a space which is at a lower pressure, the solvent used, being pentane or a mixture containing at least sufficient pentane to cause the olefin polymer to separate in the form of discrete fibrids on flashing. Preferred solvents are naphtha cuts containing 5-50 wt. per cent pentane and mixtures of n-pentane and isopentane. The concentration of the original solution may be 10-25 wt. per cent and the dissolution may be carried out at 100-180‹ C. at 10-20 atmospheres. The space into which the solution is flashed may contain a precipitant or non-solvent for the polymer, which may be the same as the solvent used to form the solution (being a non-solvent at the lower pressure). The treatment of polyethylenes, and an ethylene/ n-butyl acrylate copolymer, is exemplified.
