Abstract
1477304 Measuring speed and rotation sense SQUARE D CO 15 May 1974 [29 May 1973] 25587/73 Heading G1N A transducer assembly for determining speed and direction of movement of a rotating shaft 14 forming part of the assembly includes a magnetic core 1 with poles 2, 3, 4. A.C. energized coils 11, 12 are wound series-aiding an opposed poles 2, 3 having faces 5, 6 to provide an alternating magnetic flux through and around the shaft. The shaft is electrically conductive and has a length greater than the maximum distance between the pole faces. When shaft 14 is stationary there is no voltage induced in sensing coil 13 wound on pole 4. However when the shaft rotates the applied and induced flux fields undergo relative displacement so that the resultant leakage flux between poles 2 and 4 is not balanced by that between poles 3 and 4. Therefore a voltage is induced in coil 13 of which the amplitude is dependent on rotation speed and the phase sense depends on direction of rotation. A transducer of enhanced sensitivity utilizing this phase sense dependence is provided by a ring core 1' with an additional pole 18 and sensing coil 19 displaced by 180‹ from the core 4 and coil 13 the two coils being connected series-aiding. In an alternative embodiment Fig. 8 (not shown) the linear speed of the shaft is determined.
