Abstract
1476269 Matching cutting knives; work holders H PUTSCH & CO 26 Nov 1975 [18 Dec 1974] 48654/75 Headings B3K and B3B In a method of sharpening knives having angularly corrugated cutting edges e.g. for use in slicing sugar beet, the knives 4 are successively displaced from a delivery magazine 7 by a carrier plate 1 which transports them to a clamping device 8 capable of receiving two knives in adjacent relationship and presenting them to coarse and fine milling cutters in succession, the clamping device executing a linear stepwise indexing movement to present each corrugation of the knives to the respective milling cutters. At the commencement of the operation a single knife 4 is transported from the magazine 7 to the clamping device 8 by the carrier 1, a slide member 29 with a pivotable lever 30 thereon is then actuated to move a cross bar 24 carried by the lever 30, to locate stop members 14, 15 transversely positioned on the bar 24, through apertures 11 and 12 in the carrier plate. The carrier is then displaced transversely to its initial direction to locate the outer edge or surface of the knife against stop 14. The jaws 20, 20a of the clamping device 8 are then actuated to clamp the knife and the stops 14, 15 are returned to their intial position. The lever and bar mechanism 30, 24 is then actuated to displace the stop 14 so that its profiled end engages in the underside of the cutter knife end 6 to feed it to the rough milling cutter. At the completion of the milling operation the stop is retracted and advanced in a diagonal motion to engage the next corrugation and at the same time feed the cutter knife transversely so as to present the next corrugation to the rough milling cutter, this sequence of linear indexing motion is continued until the whole knife has been rough milled and the stop 14 is clear of the trailing end of the knife 4. A further knife 32 is then fed by the carrier plate to the vicinity of the clamping device and is positioned, as in the case of the knife 4 with its leading end abutting the stop 14. Simultaneously with the setting of the second knife 32 the first knife 4 is located against the second stop 15 and is adjacent a second clamping device 9. When the locating of the two knives is completed they are clamped by their respective devices 8 and 9, the carrier 1 is relocked and the stops displaced to their initial position. The action of the mechanism is then commenced the knives are moved in stepwise motion by the stops 14, 15 in which the first knife 4 is fine milled by a finish milling cutter and the second knife is simultaneous machined by the coarse milling cutter. At the completion of this operation, a third knife is conveyed on the carrier to the vicinity of the clamping device 8, the mechanism is actuated to laterally displace the knives 4, 32 and 33 against stops 16, 15 and 14 respectively the first knife 4 being conveyed to a finished store, the second knife 32 being moved to the finish milling position and the new knife 33 being located in the rough milling position. This method of operation permits a continuous succession of knifes to be machined with two knifes in respective machining positions at any one time.
