Abstract

1475441 Solid electrolyte oxygen sensor G HEIMKE and T BURKARD 2 Jan 1975 [4 Jan 1974] 128/75 Heading G1N The oxygen content of the flue gas of a furnace system may be determined by means of a solid electrolyte oxygen sensor 13, means 21 for heating the sensor 13 to its working temperature and enclosure means which receives the element 13 and the heating means 21 and is formed at least in part by the wire net 24 to permit the gas to flow free around the sensor 13. As described, the wire net 24 surrounds two sensors 13 and the heater means 21, the net 24 and apertures 23 in the heater means 21 allowing circulation of the flue gas in the region of the elements F3. Each element 13 comprises a tube of stabilized zirconium dioxide closed at one end within which is a tube 14 of refractory material, for example aluminium oxide ceramic, through which passes a platinum wire 15 attached to reference electrode 16, a supply of air maintaining a constant oxygen partial pressure at electrode 16. An outer, measuring electrode 17 is in contact with the flue gases. The voltage output may be used, via a regulating device (6), Fig. 1 (not shown) and proportioning device (8), to maintain the oxygen content constant. The proportioning device (8) supplies the air required for the reference electrode 16. Thermocouple wires 20 in protective tube 19 adjusts the heating means 21 to maintain the elements 13 at their working temperature.
