1474906 Diphenyl cyclopropyl pyrrolidines and their pharmaceutical compositions HEXACHIMIE 27 Sept 1974 [27 Sept 1973] 45394/73 Heading C2C The invention comprises compounds of the Formula I wherein R, R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>11</SP> are independently hydrogen halogen atoms or C 1-4 alkyl, C 1-4 alkoxy, hydroxy or trihalomethyl groups and their pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts, which may be prepared by hydrogenation of nitropentanones of general Formula II Diphenyl cyclopropyl styryl ketones are prepared by reacting a benzaldehyde having substituents R, R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>11</SP> as defined above with diphenylcyclopropyl methyl ketone in the presence of a base under the conditions of the Clausin-Schmidt condensation, and are further reacted with nitroethane in the presence of a base and in an organic solvent using the conditions of the Michael addition to obtain the corresponding 1 - (2<SP>1</SP>,2<SP>1</SP> - diphenylcyclopropyl)- 3 - (substituted phenyl) - 4 - nitropentanone. Pharmaceutical compositions having sedative and antiarrythmic properties for oral or rectal administration comprise a compound of Formula I or an acid addition salt thereof and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier or diluent.
