Abstract

1474577 Welding by fusion BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP Ltd 26 June 1975 [6 July 1974] 30066/74 Heading B3R An electron beam welding apparatus providing for intermittent seam welding comprises an electron beam generator 1, a heat sink 10 (e.g. tungsten) and a beam control device 6 for deflecting a beam 2 from a welding direction 2a (full lines) in which it impinges on a workpiece 9 to a non-welding direction 2b (chain dotted lines) in which it impinges on the heat sink. The work- piece 9 is supported on a moving work-table 3 provided with seam interruption blanking pieces 9. The beam control device 6 comprises a pair of electromagnetic coils which are electronically triggered by a photo-electric device 8 responsive to interruption of a light beam by one of the blanking pieces 9. Preferably the beam 2 is deflected in a plane containing the line of the weld 5.
