Abstract

1474569 Abrasive product UNIVERSAL GRINDING WHEEL CO Ltd 10 Oct 1975 [12 Nov 1974] 48989/74 Heading C4V An abrasive product, particularly a grinding wheel, comprises abrasive particles and a particulate refractory extender material which is substantially non-abrasive, which has a porosity of at least 30% and which is in a greater volume concentation than the abrasive material bonded together in a matrix. The extender material may comprise fire clay grog, crushed fire brick and particularly hollow spherical alumina-silicate material, optionally together with small quantities of bubble alumina which has a limited abrasive action. The abrasive may be alumina, zirconia-alumina or silicon carbide and the matrix may be of epoxy resin, polyurethane, phenol-formaldehyde resin, phosphate, silicate, magnesium oxychloride or aluminium chlorophosphate hydrate or may be a vitrified bond. When the latter is used, it may also contain a temporary combustible filler such as seeds, crushed coconut shell, walnut shell, olive stone, sawdust, graphite, coke, naphthalene or sugars, which fillers turn away on firing of the material to leave pores. The abrasive material may be pre-coated with vitrified or polymeric bond material before introduction into the matrix to bond the latter more strongly to the abrasive than to the extender.
