Abstract
1474540 Starting; supplying partially oxidized fuel to an internal combustion engine TOYOTA JIDOSHA KOGYO KK 19 Nov 1974 [10 July 1974] 50123/74 Headings F1B and F1K Apparatus for supplying partially oxidized fuel to an internal combustion engine 1 includes a fuel reformer assembly 5 comprising a heater 6 and a catalyst inserted in a fuel supply pipe leading to a carburetter 21 of the engine. The engine drives an air pump 3 which supplies air to the reformer 5 through a pipe 13 a fuel pump 16 draws fuel from a tank 14 and supplies it through a pipe 15. The fuel is ejected through a nozzle, (not shown), into the air pipe 13. The resulting mixture of fuel and air passes through an inlet 7 into the reformer 5. The fuel is reformed through partial oxidation and the mixture of oxidation products thus produced passes through a pipe 20 to the engine carburetter 21. As shown, the reformer 5 is surrounded by a casing and exhaust gas is supplied to the space 9 under control of valves V 1 V 2 V 3 . The invention is applicable particularly to assist starting of the engine but can also be used in the normal running of the engine.
