Abstract

1473619 Laminates SANYO KOKUSAKU PULP KK 16 July 1975 [17 July 1974] 29916/75 Heading B5N A composite sheet 1 comprises a base strip 2, e.g. of paper, cloth or metal foil, a plurality of stretched thermoplastic resin flat strips 3 anchored at prescribed intervals to the base strip, a bonding layer 4, e.g. of low density polyethylene or polypropylene or a pressure sensitive adhesive, anchoring the flat strips on to the base strip, and a unidirectionally drawn thermoplastic resin surface film 6 anchored to the base strip via the bonding layer in a snug and partial surface contact with the flat strips, the axis of drawing of the surface film being transverse to the axis of drawing of the flat strips. The flat strips and surface film may be made from polypropylene, high density polyethylene or polyethylene terephthalate. The composite sheet may be produced by applying the flat strips on to the surface film as it is fed to a cooling roller, applying the bonding material to the base strip, e.g. by extrusion, curtain flow coating or roller coating, as it is also fed to the cooling roller and pressing together the base strip and surface film with the flat strips and bonding layer therebetween at the nip formed between the cooling roller and a press roller. The flat strips may be supplied in the form of a continuous elongated sheet having transverse dotted cutting lines at intervals equal to the width of the flat strips, a device being provided for tearing the flat strips along the cutting lines off the continuous elongated sheet. The flat strips may be held on the surface film by holding devices.
