Abstract

1472629 Laminates; decorative wood panels MARUKEI MOKKO KK 11 Sept 1974 [29 Sept 1973 (3)] 39662/74 Headings B5N and B5L [Also in Division B6] A process for the manufacture of a decorative embossed laminate comprises: (a) surface treating a fibrous sheet material to provide an impregnation surface having a plurality of discrete fibres upstanding thereon; (b) impregnating the surface with a high molecular weight thermosetting product; (c) applying an adhesive layer over the impregnating surface; (d) disposing a thin decorative layer over the adhesive layer; (e) providing a laminating press having an embossing head with a desired pattern thereon and (f) applying heat and pressure to the laminate in the press. In one embodiment, the surface of the decorative layer adjacent the adhesive layer is coated with a surface-treating agent, e.g. polyethylene glycol or an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer prior to step (f). In a further embodiment, the assembly is enveloped in a thermoplastic film immediately subsequent to step (d). The fibrous sheet material may be particle board, plywood, chipboard, hard fibreboard, non-woven cloth or compressed felt and may have its fibres raised by scraping. The impregnant, which may be applied as a solution or emulsion by brushing, spraying, rolling or spreading may be a ureaformaldehyde resin, an acrylic resin, a phenolic resin, epoxy resin, diallyl phthalate resin, natural rubber, styrene-butadiene rubber or butadiene-acrylonitrile rubber, the solvent or vehicle therefor being optionally evaporated prior to step (c). The adhesive may be a polyvinyl acetate emulsion or a mixture thereof with a styrene-butadiene latex, a synthetic rubber, e.g. polychloroprene, an epoxy resin, an emulsion of a precondensate of melamine and formaldehyde or urea and formaldehyde or a mixture of an emulsion of a homo- or copolymer of vinyl acetate with ethylene or an acrylic ester with a second component having functional groups, e.g. maleic acid, acrylic acid, an alkyl ester of an unsaturated carboxylic acid or an amide of an unsaturated carboxylic acid. Specified decorative layers are wood veneer, e.g. oak, elm, cherry, Fraxinus Spaethiana, teak, walnut, rosewood, zebrawood or mahogany or decorative paper impregnated with a thermoset ting resin or a mixture thereof with a thermoplastic resin, e.g. a phenolic resin, a diallylphthalate resin (optionally admixed with a copolymer of methylol methacrylic amide or methylol amide with styrene, methacrylic acid ester, acrylic acid ester or acrylonitrile), a melamine resin, an unsaturated polyester resin, an epoxy resin or an acrylic resin.
