Abstract
1472079 Coating metal articles; coating apparatus G K N TRANSMISSIONS Ltd 29 Oct 1975 [29 Oct 1974] 46694/74 Headings B2E and B2L A metal article, which may be primed is coated with a film of synthetic plastics material, e.g. nylon, by applying the powdered material by electrostatic spraying while the surface is at a temperature below the fusing temperature of the material and then heating the coated article by electric induction to fuse the layer of powder into a film. Slip stubs, which comprise a plain shaft portion and a splined portion are degreased by a wet abrasive blast and transferred to a conveyor where they are gripped by chucks. Hydraulic rams 5 lift priming baths 4 so that slip stubs 3 are immersed in primer 6. The conveyor is then indexed to bring the primed slip stub over electrostatic detearing means comprising grid 7 supported on insulator 8. After excess primer has been removed, the slip stubs are dried by a current of air from a fan passing over an electric heating element. In the next coating stage drive rollers 11, 12 engage a support carrying the chucks. Each chuck is rotated so that the primed slip stub is in alignment with block 15 reciprocable vertically by ram 16. Centre 35 of block 15 can engage a complementary centre in the free end of the slip stub. Shield 13, 14 protect rollers 11, 12 and chuck 2. Spray gun 17 coats the rotating slip stub. The electrostatic spraying field is adjusted by block 15 to prevent build up of powder at the bottoms of the splines. The primed coated stubs are passed to the induction heating stage where a coil heater surrounds the splined portion in operation. A further induction heating coil is used to fuse the powder on the shaft portion. The slip stub is rotated during heating.
