Abstract

1471741 Signal lamps CARL-ZEISSSTIFTUNG [trading as JENAER GLASWERK SCHOTT & GEN] 26 July 1974 [6 Sept 1973] 33209/74 Heading F4R A signal indicator, e.g. a traffic signal lamp, comprises interposed between at least one light source 7 and a light-diffusing or light-dispersing lens 6 an optical light-conducting fibre component 2, 3 in which the separate light-conducting fibres are bunched together at the light input end 3 to form one or more single bunches of fibres corresponding to the or each light source 7 and are formed into a plurality of spread out bunches 2 at the light exit region 1, and where the spread out bunches emanate from more than one single bunch of fibres those from each single bunch are spread out over a common area of the light exit region 1. The spread out bunches from each single bunch may form an hexagonal or orthogonal closelypacked arrangement in the light exit region 1, and the lens 6 is mounted in front of this region 1 so as to be uniformly illuminated thereby. The light source 7 may comprise one or more tungsten coiled-filament or halogen lamps which may be of different light output, and which may be associated with an ellipsoidal or spherical reflector 5 and/or a light condenser. An interchangeable filter 4 may be arranged to provide a selectively coloured light output. A sensor and an associated electronic switching system may cause a stepwise variation in the efficiency of the light output in response to ambient brightness.
